My Quip – Marilyn’s First Draft – The Reconstruction Underway

Good Day,

We’ve been working on the new design of our reconstruction of our Warhol’s Marilyn.

This is our first draft of the new design… but at the same time we wanted to keep a somewhat analogous feeling due to our initial design.

This new design, coupled with what we have learned these past few years, has Andy and me excited about the new possibilities both in arrangement and quilting.  We are deciding on the sizes of the fabric borders, the fabrics, the colors of the background and framing fabrics, and the quilting.

Here is our original quilt.

Check out my announcement – My Quip – Something Old, Something New…

Definitely would like to hear your comments, thoughts, and opinions. Email us at Quilts SB.

Enjoy,

My Quip - Cotton Fabric, Surface Review - Did It Ever Change?

Good Day,

Because Jim and I quilt - a lot- and we use cotton fabric for a majority of our quilting, I thought I would look into some of the new wrinkle resistant advancements that have occurred since my college days in my textile science classes.

I had to laugh to myself when I was reading an article on some of the chemical related advancements.

USING NANO-TiO2 AS CO-CATALYST FOR IMPROVING WRINKLE-RESISTANCE OF COTTON FABRIC

At one time I actually could understand this...LOL. In order to prevent cotton wrinkling, hydroxyl groups in the cellulose chain of cotton are partially cross-linked to keep the chain fixed relative to each other with dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea (DMDHEU). However, DMDHEU suffers disadvantages of reduced fabric strength and releasing of free formaldehyde. Recently, 1,2,3,4-butane tetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) has been explored as a new wrinkle-resistant agent providing similar performance to that of DMDHEU.

In BTCA finishing, catalyst of inorganic phosphorus-containing acids was used but such phosphorus compounds have an adverse impact on the environment. In this paper, nano-TiO2 was used as a co-catalyst with sodium hypophophite in the treatment of cotton with BTCA, and the final properties were assessed.

My Quip – Tampa Kaleidoscope – Quilting Has Begun

Good Day,

I have been sort of quiet on our blog, Quilts SB for the past few days...but it certainly doesn’t mean, apart from having the flu, that we have not been at work. Of course I mean our quilts and afghans. Mind you, we may have been taking it a wee bit slower than usual.

Tampa Kaleidoscope has been loaded to our Longarm sewing machine. We are trying our quilting pattern that we hope well highlight each and every hexagon.

This has been a very good and exciting effort. The resulting quilt and reconstruction of the fabric that creates the top certainly is something to see. Our Tampa Kaleidoscope, once completed, will be a very large quilt with the approximate dimensions of 94” (239 cms) wide and 108” (274 cms) long.

If you have any comments or questions thoughts ideas please feel free to contact us at Quilts SB.

Enjoy,
Jim and Andy
