My Quip - BW 1950 and BW 2010 - Tops Completed - Front and Back

Good Day,

Andy and I are just about completed with both our BW 1950 and BW 2010. All that is left to complete are the borders, the binding, the labels, and the final inspections.

Here are the front views of the tops. BW 1950 on the left and BW 2010 on the right.

Each of our BWs is now 24" square and constructed of 900 0.8-inch squares. Some of the squares are made with triangles.

And from the backs or underneaths. BW 1950 on the left and BW 2010 on the right.

Please feel free to comment, ask questions, and pass any thought and idea.

Enjoy,

Jim and Andy

My Quip - Quilts and Wall Hangings In Progress

Good Day,

Andy and I have planned and are working a number of projects so far this year. And 2014 has just started. All-things-being-equal we now have 23 quilt and wall hanging projects scheduled.

This is our adventure. Andy at the Janome 6300, Jim at the PC.

Our current project list is in order of our priorities. "C" means that that area is completed, and a percentage is the degree of completion. A blank space translates to "We haven't got there yet." A red "C" means that the quilt or wall hanging has been completed.

My Quip – BW 1950 Quilt and Wall Hanging – Happy 92nd Betty White

Good Day and our best wishes to Betty White on her 92nd birthday.

What a wonderful life and celebration.

And what an ideal way for Andy and I to celebrate. We are now working the quilting to our BW 1950.

We have decided that the best way to quilt and showcase our BW 1950 is to quilt it as if were the mosaic that we intended it to be. I kept thinking and dreaming of Frank McRae when he is lovingly putting the mosaic tiles back in place in the 1987 film *batteries not included. And we are trying to create that similar type of presentation with our quilt and wall hanging.

Happy Birthday Betty White.

Enjoy,

Jim and Andy.

My Quip – BW 2010 and BW 1950 – Quilts and Wall Hangings – Tops Completed

Good Day,

The top of our BW 2010 is now completed.

The construction of 900 0.8-inch squares, made of a combination of squares and triangles, has been completed. Our BW 2010 was created using 18 fabrics.

BW 2010 is an abstract mosaic that we have attempted to construct using a photograph taken by David Shankbone in 2010.

The photograph is of Betty White. We just hope that our construction and quilt and wall hanging is a credit both to his work and especially to Betty White.

BW 2010 is a companion piece to our BW 1950. BW 1950 is also our abstract mosaic interpretation of a 1950 photograph of Betty White. It is also a construction of 900 0.8-inch squares, an arrangement of squares and triangles. BW 1950 was made using 16 fabrics in an attempt to keep the essence of the black and white portrait.

The photograph is of the Hutton Archive / Getty Images collection. The two photographs and our two quilts and wall hangings span 60 years of an incredible life. BW 1950 represents Betty White when she was 28 years old. BW 2010 is her at 88. An amazing woman.

Now comes the critical point where we have to decide and finalize how we are going to quilt our BW 2010 and its companion BW 1950. The next stage of the project will be the quilting, and we have to choose a quilting pattern that will both enhance and compliment the two pieces.

Oh and by the way the names of our pieces will change. Follow our progress and detailed updates at Quilts SB

Enjoy,

My Quip – BW 2010 – Quilt and Wall Hanging – Almost There

Good Day,

I think that a tremendous thrill occurs when one can see and envision the almost completion of a project. Our BW 2010 is just about at that point.

The last part of the first third should be completed today. And then the first third will be added to the other two-thirds of the top.

But that now becomes the critical point where we have to decide and finalize how we are going to quilt our BW 2010 and its companion BW 1950. The next stage of the project will be the quilting, and we have to choose a quilting pattern that will both enhance and compliment the two pieces.

I believe that some of the guesses have been on the mark as to who BW 1950 and BW 2010 represents. The two mosaic abstracts represent the same person at different points in that person’s life. But I am not going to say just yet.

My Quip – BW 2010 – Quilt and Wall Hanging – Top 66% Complete

Good Day,

The top of our BW 2010 is now 66% complete.

The last third to go.

And now we have to get serious about our design and pattern for the quilting of the two companion pieces BW 1950 and BW 2010.

Here is another image of our BW 2010 taken with different lighting.

And from underneath.

Guesses of our abstract portrait have been hitting the correct one. Follow our progress and detailed updates at Quilts SB

My Quip – BW 2010 – Quilt and Wall Hanging – Two-Thirds Nearing Completion

Good Day,

And yes we are continuing our work on our BW 2010.

We are both extremely pleased at what is happening to the construction and the revealing of our abstract design. Two-thirds of our design should equal to 600 0.8-inch squares. Of course we have also been using triangles to create some of the squares.  The completed top will be constructed of 900 squares.

If you look beyond the scotch tape, have you figured out who our BW 2010 could be? Remember that our BW 1950 is definitely linked to our BW 2010.

My Quip – BW 2010 – Quilt and Wall Hanging – 96 Pieces Completed

Good Day,

Work continues on our BW 2010.

Andy is currently working on the right-hand third of the top. We are attempting to match the thread colors as we piece the corresponding blocks. This should lend for a blend of similar colors between the piecing thread and the blocks.

What you now see is a construction of 96 squares, composed of 81 squares and 30 triangles. There are 18 fabrics in BW 2010 as opposed to 16 in BW 1950. Each square is 0.8 inches square while each triangle is an isosceles triangle with two sides that are 0.8 inches and a diagonal that is 1.13 inches.

I have taken two images using varied lighting. And the scotch tape doesn't count.

Any guesses as to who our abstract represents?

My Quip – BW 2010 – Quilt and Wall Hanging – Middle Third Completed

Good Day,

Well, it looks like a face is beginning to appear to our BW 2010 quilt and wall hanging.

This is the middle third of our designed top.

There are 18 fabrics in BW 2010 as opposed to 16 in BW 1950. Each square is 0.8 inches square while each triangle is an isosceles triangle with two sides that are 0.8 inches and a diagonal that is 1.13 inches.

My Quip – BW 2010 – Quilt and Wall Hanging – The Progress Is Great

Good Day,

Okay I just have to boast. Andy is doing some tremendous work. Our BW 2010 is design progressing and we are amazed at what we are beginning to see.

And yes that is a dime.

The top is now 23.3% completed.

Here is an image of the reverse of the top of BW 2010. Just take a gander.

Any guesses as to who it may be? Both BW 1950 and BW 2010 represent the same person.

Enjoy,

My Quip – BW 2010 – Quilt and Wall Hanging – Update

Good Day,

This morning’s posting is short and sweet. The work on the construction of BW 2010 continues to progress.

Each square piece is 0.8 inches on each side.

One of the key points in the assembling of pieces, especially small triangles to make a square is to cut the pieces a tad bit larger in order that they can be trimmed to an accurate square. And in this case to the 0.8 inch square.

If you have any comment, thought, idea or question, excepting the identity of our mystery person, please feel free to contact us at Quilts SB.

Enjoy,

My Quip – BW 2010 – Quilt and Wall Hanging – Impressive Work Continues

Good Day,

The colors of BW 2010 are variants of red and brown…

as compared to BW 1950 which is a composition of 16 fabrics of the shades of grey to black.

The above 10 by 10 construction is of the upper third of the inner third of the actual composition. It is composed of 0.8 inch squares and 0.8 by 0.8 by 1.13 inch triangles. Both BW 2010 and BW 1950 are being constructed and pieced in a similar manner. BW 2010 and BW 1950 are assembled using 18 and 16 fabrics, respectively.

It will be interesting to see who the differences, if any will, appear when both are completed and compared side-by-side.

Thank you to those who took some time to respond to our request for suggestions regarding the quilting.

Guesses so far as to the identity of our abstract art form have been:

  • Liza Minnelli,
  • Audrey Hepburn,
  • Katherine Hepburn,
  • Elizabeth Taylor,
  • Rosalind Russell,
  • Charlie Chaplin, and
  • Andy’s Mother.

Please keep guessing. We are definitely curious if either BW 1950 and/or BW 2010 will appear to be who they may seem to be.

Enjoy,

Jim and Andy

My Quip – BW 1950 Quilt and Wall Hanging – Top Completed

Good Day,

The top of our BW 1950 has been completed.

It is our abstract construction of a black and white portrait. The quilt and wall hanging when complete will measure 24-inches square. It is composed of 0.8-inch squares and isosceles triangles which each have two sides that are 0.8 inches and a diagonal of 1.13 inch. If our BW 1950 was constructed of only squares it would be an assembly of 900 squares created from 16 different fabrics.

Here is another image.

This will be a companion piece to our, now under construction, BW 2010.

We are currently working on the design of the quilting patterns for both BW 1950 and BW 2010. The question will be what can we create that will be a composite of a golden 60.

Stay tuned for our updates and progress,

Regards,

Jim and Andy
