My Quip - Sleep Jezebel - Our New Quilt and Wall Hanging - Update

Good Day,

And yes our new Sleep Jezebel is slowly coming together. Andy and I are taken aback at how this new wall hanging and quilt is progressing.

As some of you have seen, the top of our Sleep Jezebel was completed with a combination of 14 fabrics. We're trying to reproduce, with some of our own artistic license, an abstract and somewhat bit-mapped reproduction of a black and white photograph.

The top is a construction of 900 squares positioned into 30 by 30 columns and rows. Each square and constructed square are just 1 3/4" sewn.  Completed our quilt and wall hanging should be 52 ½” by 52 ½”.

Yes our Sleep Jezebel is pixelated from a photograph.  We attempted to break up the image into visible pixels.

We're not going to reveal the actual photograph as yet...for comparison, but should you guess who is our Sleep Jezebel, please do.  Andy and I would like to know if you do.

Here's a clue - It is not 1938.

We are also trying something completely different with our quilting.  It may work, and then again it may not.  And please remember that our Sleep Jezebel, when completed is not intended to be a copied representation.

If you have any thoughts, ideas, questions, or comments please feel free to contact us at Quilts SB.

Check back to Quilts SB or Quilts SB Facebook for our progress and updates.

Enjoy,

Jim and Andy

Q123 – Blue Zoo – Quilt and Wall Hanging

Good Day,

Our new quilt and wall hanging Blue Zoo has arrived at its new home in South Carolina.

Blue Zoo is the celebration and welcoming of a new grand-nephew.

The construction and piecing of Blue Zoo follows the lines of a simple modern-style quilt. It is four-and-a-bit window frames on a light blue background. The following is an image of my original design-draft. The Michael Miller Baby Zoology Sea was chosen as the focus material. Complementary fabrics were picked which included the Moda Bella Light Blue background, and the Michael Miller Baby Play Stripe Sea and Dumb Dot Charcoal.

Here is our first draft -

And the top construction -

The dimensions of Blue Zoo are: Width 42 ½” (108 cms) and Length 60” (152 cms).

The quilting of bamboo canes fills the background and negative space. Each of the Zoology Seas windows is quilted with a pebbling to provide a sort of bubble-glass effect.

My Quip - Just An Update - Always More To Come

Good Day,

Andy and I have been asked if we could provide regular updates of what our brains, hands, and machines are doing in our quilting world. And yes it is almost a 24/7 undertaking that we committed ourselves to just about 5 years ago.

We are learners in this world of quilting and fabric art. We are neither classical nor contemporary, neither do we label ourselves modern or art quilters. We sort of fall in-between and kind of overlap each. Andy and I just like to learn and we like to try different methods and techniques.  We like to create our own designs, borrowing from the inspiration and work of others.

We are always learning and ever so grateful to those who share their talent and skills with us.

And here is a quick update.  (Check out the links as provided, in some cases.)

Our Blue Zoo has reached its new home in South Carolina. We will be providing a complete post shortly on Quilts SB with images and what we did.

The quilting work is progressing on our Sleep Jezebel. We're trying something different to highlight this abstract mosaic of 14 fabrics.

Starts and stops are the order of the day in the quilting design of our Equality quilt.

Our Sea and Sky Quilt and wall hanging, as a part of the 2014 Hoffman Challenge Tour, will be in Sarasota, FL tomorrow at the Friendship Knot Quilters Guild Meeting.  It will then travel up to Moorefield, West Virginia to the Hardy County Heritage Weekend Quilt Show on September 27-28.

Light Bringer will be on display at the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza XXI September 18-21.

Our Blumish Two is currently on display in Evolutions at The Quilt Museum in Golden Colorado.

BW 1950 and BW 2010, our Betty Whites continues to be a part of the Notable Women Quilt Initiative.

Three of our quilts - Warhol's Itch, I Really Love Lucy, and EssbeeCon are in North Carolina and will be on display at the forthcoming Splash Quilt Show in Cabarrus County.

Tampa Kaleidoscope is on display at Keep Me In Stitches on Kennedy Blvd. in South Tampa.

If you're in Clearwater mid-October to just before Thanksgiving, be sure to check out our participation at the Fiber Expressions presentation.   Check back with Quilts SB for more details soon.

(Thank you KK for creating the postcard.)

And of course Andy and I have a number of projects in progress at our sweat shop.  Yes it is 91.4°F
 in Tampa.
