This past summer Andy and were invited by Susanne Jones to consider the possibility of submitting entries to the Fly Me to the Moon: An Art Quilt Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Man’s Walk on the MoonApollo 1, The Beginning is one of our three entries.

The Fly Me to the Moon project is a multi-faceted juried exhibition. All-things-being-equal the exhibit will be in museums and galleries and NASA facilities. The majority of the participants are from the United States. International participants are from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom. Pieces selected will travel for the next four years.

Our Apollo 1, The Beginning is a celebration and a memorial quilt and wall-hanging.

"On January 27, 1967, tragedy struck the Apollo program when a flash fire occurred in command module 012 during a launch pad test of the Apollo/Saturn space vehicle being prepared for the first piloted flight, the AS-204 mission. Three astronauts, Lt. Col. Virgil I. Grissom, a veteran of Mercury and Gemini missions; Lt. Col. Edward H. White, the astronaut who had performed the first United States extravehicular activity during the Gemini program; and Roger B. Chaffee, an astronaut preparing for his first space flight, died in this tragic accident." (NASA History Program Office)

All three of Andy's and my quilt wall-hangings - Betwixt and Between; Cosmo's Moon 2.5; and Apollo 1, The Beginning have been juried and accepted as a part of the Fly Me To The Moon project and journey.

The dimensions of our Apollo 1, The Beginning are Width - 18" (45.7 cms) and Length - 30" (76.2 cms).  Fabrics are Graduation Batiks, all available from SewBatik.  Our techniques include piecing, strip piecing, foundation piecing, color/shade manipulation, appliquéing and free-hand/motion quilting.
