My Quip – Scrapple – Dino in the Window Quilt

Good Day,

Another new experience, I made Scrapple. Not Spam... Scrapple! Not that I am a connoisseur of the essences of Scrapple, I am amazed that a concoction of grits, cheddar cheese, and bulk pork sausage, fried in olive oil and served with tomato sauce could be so, so good. I think I have found another food-like. Door and table is always open.

A new quilt top has been finished, Dino in the Window.

Dino in the Window is an adaptation and construction of a Four-Patch variation and a Snowball block as designed by Janet Wickell.

The completed top’s dimensions are: Width – 34” (86 cms) and Length – 46” (117 cms), without binding or border. Eventually a name and date will be embroidered in the lattice working of the quilt. Stay tuned for the completion of Dino in the Window.

Don't forget to check out our available quilts at Quilts SB Etsy. The winds of winter are just around the corner... and the Holidays are just around the bend. And maybe the Stork is on the way?

Good Evening,

Born This Way has been entered into the “Splash of Color Challenge” category.

Provence into the “Bed Quilt – Pieced Traditional – Large” category.

My Quip - Mondrian I Quilt - Update

Good Day,

Weigh in this morning – 10.6 lbs; 12.0 lbs; 16.4 lbs; and 65.0 lbs. Them’s the Pack; Tinker, Bella, Radar, and Taylor. And guess which one is the “A” dog? Yup, the smallest, Tinker. I still don’t understand a total of sixteen pairs of legs only add up to 104 lbs. There are still four set of vocal chords… especially when the Greys and the USPS delivery truck are around.

The next update of our line of quilts in progress, currently in succession, is Mondrian I. Mondrian I is our quilt which is a part of our Rainbow Glass Series. It has been prepped and is hanging on the Rack ready to be quilted.

Here are two images of the front and back of Mondrian I.

Based on the current dimensions: Width – 75” ( cms) and Length 90” ( cms), Mondrian I will more than likely equal the size of a Double Quilt.

Stay tuned for our progress.

My Quip – Twisted Basket Quilt

Good Morning,

It’s time for the morning update.

And now in the inimitable words of Monty Python… “And now for something completely different.” I’ve always wanted to say that for no real apparent reason, except we have begun a new quilt, our Twisted Basket.

According to Andy this new quilt appears to have more sewing in the sashing than in the actual quilt block itself. Twisted Basket is our adaptation of Kimberly Einmo’s quilt design Braided Links… The fabrics are predominantly from a Moda design line entitled Dream On by Urban Chiks, and presented in a Jelly Roll. The sashing is constructed of two additional complementary fabrics.

Here is a quick peek at the beginnings of the construction of Twisted Basket. (Right now it looks like it is an Easter Basket in shambles…)

The top construction, without border or binding, will approximate: Length – 72” (183 cms); Width – 62” (158 cms). Twisted Basket may be completed as a lap, full, or queen size quilt.

We are always looking for new designs and quilt challenges. If you are interested in commissioning your quilt please contact us.

My Quip – Dogwood Steps Quilt

Good Day,

And here is the first of my brief and momentary updates of some of the quilts we are currently working on.

Dogwood Steps is a commissioned quilt that will, upon completion, make its home in New York. Dogwood Steps will be similar in form and design to our Coral Steps... Coral Steps is our adaptation and inspired by the works of quilt artist Yoshiko Jinzenji.

Here are two of the fabrics that will be incorporated into Dogwood Steps.

Dogwood Steps is intended to be a California King sized quilt, so you can image how large the final result will eventually be.

If you are interested in commissioning your quilt please contact us.

My Quip - What Are Those Quilting Fools Up to?

Good Day,

And as I sit once again in a quasi-comfortable chair waiting for my morning appointment the entry room TV blasts a Three Stooges advertisement about something about buying back gold for cash. Do we have to suffer and contend with the mental acumen of viewers that this marketing pitch is set for?. Hell, the Three Stooges and gold. Subliminally, stooge aka idiot... if one is sucked into the truth of the guarantees that ad offers.

Andy and I are keeping ourselves busy with our quilting. Here is a quick summary of our current efforts and thoughts.

1. Mondrian I is on the rack to be basted. We are currently deciding on the quilting pattern that will highlight the rainbow glass effects of each panel.

2. We are at the primary stage of choosing fabrics for two new Jacqueline de Jonge quilts. We will be attending her class this October to learn and understand her paper-piecing and color use techniques.

3. The Civil War reproduction fabrics have been received. I am trying to find some images of original quilts and/or blocks from circa 1860s. There are a number of nice and unique designs available in Internetland. In most cases the design provenance are usually that which a designer or quilt artist has created as either an adaptation or by inspiration. I am searching for originals and/or documented reproductions.

4. The storks are going to be busy, extremely busy. To date two of a possible four maybe seven baby and infant quilts have been completed.

5. Mauk II top is currently under construction. This is number two quilt of our Escher Series.

6. Cathedral Windows Winchester is currently in the design stage. All-things-being-equal this new quilt will be considered a part of our Cathedral Windows and Raindow Glass Series.

7. The design for Mondrian II has been completed. This will be a new addition to our Rainbow Glass Series.

6. Colored Windows II is be prepped for delivery to the MQX West 2011 Show in Portland, Oregon.

7. I am working on a new Paul Klee inspired design.

8. The design for Mauk III has been completed. Hopefully we can capture the element and flow of Escher's tessellations movement.

9. Andy has finished cutting and is now constructing a new quilt we have adapted from Kimberly Einmo's design Braided Links. The fabrics included are from a Moda Dream On Jelly Roll plus.

10. We are setting a goal of at least a possible seven entries to various quilt shows next year. These should include Florida, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Utah, Kansas, Oregon, and Michigan. This is a dream list... And we can only take one day at a time.

Don't forget to check out our available quilts at Quilts SB Etsy. The winds of winter are just around the corner... and the Holidays are just around the bend.

Q91 – NC the coast - Quilt

Good Day,

And our newly completed quilt, NC the coast is now bound for its new home, North Carolina. This blue Bargello quilt is a work of art. We are so pleased how this has turned out. It should please its new owner who asked us to present a work that would capture for them, their love of the North Carolina sea coast.

Presented with three elements: the NC coast; the waves; and the color, blue jewel, our composition does present the foundations in their quilt, NC the coast. And NC the coast is topped off with their signature, the blue embroidered hearts.

NC the coast is a constructed four-by-four grid of Bargello waves. The waves, their foam peaks, and the watery depths are composed of 16 fabrics in a progression of varying shades to provide that inevitable movement of the sea. The backing fabric is a beige light sand hue highlighted with swirls of corresponding colors and shades that offset the waves lapping on the shore.

The dimensions of NC the coast are: Width – 92.5” (235 cms); Length – 103.5 “ (263 cms). All fabrics and batting are 100% cotton.

And here are more images of NC the coast.

Q90 – MEM911 – Wall Hanging – Quilt

Afternoon,

Number two Wall Hanging – Quilt of our Cathedral Windows Series is now complete. May I introduce to you MEM911.

MEM911 is our thoughts in commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 Tragedy. Our Quilt and Wall Hanging is not intended to be a reproduction of the tragedy and horrific devastation, but a quiet memory. A quiet and ethereal portrayal of an event that has been etched in the minds of millions; an incident that should never be forgotten.

The abstract and graphic representation of the Cathedral Window is a focus of our reflection. This is a generation of rising shades of fabrics in the clouds underlining the glass and metal of the Twin Towers. The beige fabric is the structure and strength that hold together all these thoughts and memories. The patterned squares in the horizontal cuts of the colored fabrics represent the windows and the many lives lost and those affected.

If you look closely at the quilting you will see an impression in thread of the Twin Towers. We wanted the memory to be engraved in both the clouds and the patterns of the fabrics.

The dimensions of MEM911 are: Width – 39” (99 cms); Length – 48” (122 cms). The 100% cotton check fabrics were designed by Michael Miller. The separating grey cloud fabric is a product of Timeless Treasures Fabrics. Our quilting includes three stylings; horizontal lines in each of the rectangles and squares; an accented quilting of highlighting the clouds; and vertical and horizontal lines representing the Twin Towers.

Here are some more images and close-ups of MEM911.
