Q121 – Tampa Kaleidoscope – Quilt

Good Day,

We have now completed our 121st quilt, Tampa Kaleidoscope.

Our Tampa Kaleidoscope is one humongous quilt created primarily from one fabric. The Tampa Fabric was commissioned by Keep Me In Stitches a local Tampa Bay specialty sewing center. This is Andy’s and my second attempt at constructing a quilt/wall hanging using this fabric. Our first is Tampa Windows a quilted wall hanging. To date we have not yet constructed a typical Hawaiian style shirt from this fabric.

Tampa Kaleidoscope is a large king size quilt that measures 88” (224 cms) wide and 100” long (254 cms). The construction of the top includes three of the Keep Me In Stitches (KMIS) fabric colorways plus complimentary blue and grey fabrics. Our inspiration of the kaleidoscope design using the KMIS fabric is the work of quilt artist Bruce Seeds  and Maxine Rosenthal’s 2005 book, One-Block Wonders – One Fabric, One Shape, One-of-a-Kind Quilts.  The blues and the grey, (no play on words intended), are used for the borders and the backing.

We designed and used both our Babylock Jewel Longarm and our Janome Memory Craft Professional to create a free motion quilting design. The techniques we used are concentric hexagons, pebbling, and stippling. The threads used were both Sulky and YLI.

Here are images. We are both amazed at and how the cutting technique transforms the original fabric.

Follow our construction and progress of our Tampa Kaleidoscope.

Q120 –Diamonds – Quilt and Wall Hanging

Good Day,

Andy and I would like to present our 120th quilt and wall hanging, Diamonds.

Diamonds was designed, pieced, and quilted by Jim Smith and Andy Brunhammer

The inspiration for our Diamonds is a combination and connection to our designs Light Bringer and Sea and Sky. It is creation using paper piecing and applique while focusing on the idea of a three-dimensional geometric perspective and design.

Diamonds is the third of a series of three quilts and wall hangings all inspired by the movement of the Hoffman Challenge fabric Indigo of the Anisa line. Including the two other quilts, also our original designs, Light Bringer and Sea and Sky, we attempt to relate a story of a moving creation. Apart from the Indigo fabric we incorporated the Aqua, Black, Mint, Blues, and Pink fabrics of the Anisa line into our design.

Our Diamonds measures: Width – 37” (97.2 cms) by Length/Height 39” (97.8 cms). All thread used in our quilting design is Sulky thread selected for the Hoffman Challenge. Our idea was to use parallel straight lines to compliment the nine boxes. In the kaleidoscopes/hexagons we’ve used descending, yet joined hexagons within each. Beginning at the central vanishing point we added a series of concentric circles and quilted a pebbling effect.

This is our venture into something new and is a part of our quilting learning experience.
