My Quip - Diamonds Accepted - No Girls Allowed!

Good Day,

Our Diamonds quilt has been chosen to be included at the No Girls Allowed! exhibit at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum in Golden, Colorado January 29 through April 26, 2016.

Diamonds is the 3rd quilt of our series - Light Bringer (Q118), Sea and Sky (Q119), and Diamonds (Q120).

My Quip – Elation – Quilt in Progress, A New Wall Hanging

Elation… Definition – Great happiness and exhilaration.

Andy and I have started another challenge and experiment.  Elation. We are creating a new piece that all-things-being-equal should be in the vicinity of 30-inches wide and 50-inches long.

We are using our strip-piecing technique.

If you follow us at Quilts SB we will be providing you with our progress and our updates.

The first thing we decided upon was the size of our new Elation. As mentioned above it will be about 30” wide and 50” long, that computes to 1,500 square inches, give or take.

Our first task is to create our canvas. It is a canvas of strips of muslin; the strips are various sizes between just less than 1-inch and up to a bit more than 3-inches. In this case we are starting with 14 strips.

Once constructed a base draft of our overall design is drawn on the canvas. This provides a guideline for our initial thought processes. These may, of course, change during the progress of our construction.

The design is then subdivided to determine which part of the construction we will attack. We decided upon the upper right hand portion of the quilt as the first part. The first part of the design was highlighted on the canvas both in pencil and with a fine tip Sharpie.

Andy has worked on a sampler to try and see how to piece the segments to the design.

Next step, the fabric choice and selection. I counted 63 segments for the first part.

Q135 – Mother’s Treasures – Quilt

Andy and I have completed our 135th quilt – Mother’s Treasures.

This is our 2nd attempt at a Raw-Edge Raggy quilt. Check out Blue Fluff (Q132)

Our approach – We started with saved and treasured clothes for the top of Mother’s Treasures with the intention that there may be a personal story and the effect of memories.

Our Mother’s Treasures is just one of these types of Raw-Edge Raggy Quilt. And yes we cut up the treasured and saved clothes.

To create each block for Mother’s Treasures a triple layer quilt sandwich was created: the top fabric, the batting, and a square of neutral-colored flannel. 80 individual block sandwiches were created.

Two sandwiches were sewn together leaving about a 1/2" outside seam. This seam is what is used to create the ragged edge. Stripes of blocks were then sewn together to create a 8 by 10 grid of squares; the top is smooth and the flannel backing has a crisscross of protruding edges.

All the protruding edges are clipped at equal distance, taking care not to cut through the joining stitch line. This creates the ragged edge.

Forget using a regular pair of scissors. We used a Rag Quilter Snip. This definitely made the job of clipping easier and with a better control.

The dimensions of Mother’s Treasures are: Width – 61” (155 cms); Length – 76 1/4” (194 cms).

Q134 – Daughter Light – Quilt Wall Hanging

Good Day,

Andy and I have completed our 134th quilt and wall hanging – Daughter Light.

Daughter Light is a wall hanging with the dimensions: Width – 20” and Length 28 ¾”.

We were requested and invited by Jaimee Ponce, a professional photographer, to create a pair of quilt hangings that represented the memories of her son and daughter from the clothes of days gone by. The two quilts are Daughter Light (Q134) and Son Shine (Q133).

Jaimee presented us with a sample quilt piece that she had found and asked us to use it as our inspiration for Daughter Light.  (If anyone is familiar with the fabric artist please let either Andy or I know so that we may be able to provide credit for our inspiration.)

The hearts were cut from her daughter's original baby clothes. All the hearts were fused and stitched with clear thread to the background.

The moon and the landscape were horizontally pieced on strips, a technique that we have been using in a number of our quilts. These were added to the arrangement.

The daughter is a of a photograph by Jaimee Ponce, which we transferred to fabric, cut out, fused and appliqued to the quilt.

As you can see from our images we endeavored to add and include a number of different forms of quilting to accentuate, highlight, and enhance the actual composition.

Daughter Light will now make its home in Florida.

Q133 – Son Shine – Quilt Wall Hanging

Andy and I have completed our 133rd quilt and wall hanging – Son Shine.

Son Shine is a wall hanging with the dimensions: Width – 20” and Length 28 ¾”.

We were requested and invited by Jaimee Ponce, a professional photographer, to create a pair of quilt hangings that represented the memories of her son and daughter from the clothes of days gone by. The two quilts are Son Shine (Q133) and Daughter Light (Q134).

The clothes lines include shirts, pants and pairs of socks that were cut from her son's original baby clothes. All the clothes were fused and stitched with clear thread to the background. The clothes lines were tripled stitched to give a similar effect of cord stitching.

The sun and the landscape were horizontally pieced on strips, a technique that we have been using in a number of our quilts. These were added to the arrangement.
