My Quip – Mondrian I Progress Update

Good Evening,

Yes… we do not stop. Quilting is our passion, period.

The top to our Mondrian I quilt, of our Rainbow Series, is now completed. Thirty 14” squares, all separated with a black patterned fabric. The border, around the perimeter creates a gorgeous stained-glass effect. Thank you, Piet Mondrian for the inspiration.

Our Mondrian I top, including the border and without the binding, dimensions are – Width – 76” (193 cms) and Length – 90” (229 cms).

My images, with the back-lighting of the Tampa sun, show and provide an effective presentation of our unfinished quilt top.

Once the batting and backing are sandwiched to the top the fabric colors will become deeper and richer.

I have not, as yet, decided on the quilting pattern, and I will leave that to a surprise upon completion.

Stay-tuned for our progress. Oh and by the way, two new designs of our new Series, yet to be named, have been completed and drafted. A third is in process.

My Quip – New Quilt – Our Escher I Progress

Afternoon again,

Obviously I am catching up on the work that we have been doing, and now for something completely different…

Our next quilt is in progress. Actually the top is completed. It is Our Escher I.

Using a quilt block pattern, the Arabic Lattice, which may date as far back as about 1850, we have used two 100% cotton fabrics to create a somewhat “Escher-ish” visual effect. The light brown fabric is titled Visual Arts #2247 by Ro Gregg for Northcott Silk Inc. The “eye-ball” fabric is from The Providence Collection, #28519-3 of Windham Fabrics. Both fabrics were obtained through Fabric.com.

The pattern of Our Escher I (OEI) is a tessellation. A tessellation is a pattern made of identical shapes with two specifications. 1. The shapes must fit together without any gaps; and 2. The shapes should not overlap.

Arabic Lattice Quilt patterns were printed in the 9 January 1935 and 27 March 1935 editions of The Kansas City Star and its sister publications The Weekly Star and The Star Farmer. From The Quilt Index, one Arabic Lattice quilt example, of the Rhode Island Quilt Documentation Project, University of Rhode Island, provides a dating circa 1850.

And here are some more images of OEI taken with and without flash.

Stay-tuned for our progress. I’m now looking for a “fishy” pattern to create the quilting.

My Quip - Colored Windows Quilt Progress

Afternoon,

The top to Colored Windows has been completed. Colored Windows is a new addition to our Rainbow Series.

My thought of this design originated with Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, Rear Window. Amy Walsh, for Blue Underground Studios has created a quilt pattern, her Rear Window. Adapting the pattern I have created our interpretation, Colored Windows.

Colored Windows, presently, approximates the following dimensions – Width: 64” (163 cms); Length 79 ½” (202 cms). There will be some difference once we decide on a border and add the binding.

The images are of the completed top without batting or backing. I really like the sun’s effect as it is reflected through the fabric.

Here are a couple of more images.

Stay-tuned for our continued progress. I have received notice that OP Ornament, our finalist entry to MQX East 2011 has arrived, intact, at the Show’s headquarters.

My Quip – Mystery Jelly Progress and Update

Morning,

Our quilting work continues… and continues. The top of our new one of our quilts has been finished: Mystery Jelly (MJ). The borders have all been sewn to the perimeter.

MJ has been mounted to our frame and long-arm quilting machine. The design for the quilting has been selected. The top, the batting, and the backing are each loaded to one of three feeder rods. The idea is that as the quilting progresses the completed portion, the “quilt-wich”, is then loaded to a fourth rod. It is on the fourth rod that the quilted quilt is rolled up.

Once the quilting is finished, the binding is then added around the perimeter. It is then hand-stitched. MJ will be approximately 64” (163 cms) wide. The length will be about 77” (196 cms).

MJ is an adaptation of a Kimberly Einmo design. The beginning is a nine-block square. We’ve increased it to 20 blocks and included sashing as a border around and between each block. Also a double border has been added around the perimeter.

Here are some more images of MJ on the quilting frame.

Stay-tuned for our progress. The completed MJ will make its new home in North Carolina.

My Quip – Mondrian I Progress

Evening,

This is our “Mondrian” square.

The works of Pieter Cornelis “Piet” Mondriaan, after 1912 Mondrian, are the inspiration for my next quilt designs for our Rainbow Series. Mondrian’s compositions of lines and quadrilaterals have provided me with a concrete and simple method of inter-connecting fabrics of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

The inserted image is Mondrian’s 1923 Composition A: Composition with Black, Red, Gray, Yellow, and Blue. It is oil on canvas and is housed at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome.

Our Mondrian I quilt is a configuration of 30 14” (35.6 cms) squares. Each square is constructed with six batik fabrics.

All squares are identical in color and form. A black patterned fabric, as sashing, will border each square and will also border the perimeter of the quilt. To that affect, there is a sense of a created stained-glass window. Mondrian I will join our Rainbow Glass quilt as complementary within our Rainbow Series.

Stay-tuned for our progress.

Q81 - She's Here - Quilt

Greetings,

Our newest addition to our Portfolio of completed Quilts – She’s Here. (In truth, She’s almost here… Baby J is scheduled to arrive In May.) And She’s Here has arrived at its new home in Wilmington, Delaware.

She’s Here is our 82nd addition to our Quilt Portfolio. It’s measurements are: Width – 37” (94 cms) and Length – 48” (122 cms).

The colourwash approach creates a gradual interplay of the colors and shades of white, pink, grey, and slate-blue. All seven fabrics and batting are 100%cotton and were obtained through Fabric.com. Thanks R for the suggestion of the pinks and greys.

Here are a number of images of She’s Here; front, close-ups, and back. Please note that the colors of this quilt may be affected somewhat by the outdoor lighting and the quality of my picture taking.

The perimeter of She’s Here is a “fanciful” border of Prairie Points. The border is of folded-squares reconstructed into triangles. These are also called Prairie Points. They are added after the quilting is completed. The quilting is a series of horizontal and parallel lines.

Our finished quilt is a size adaptation of a Dierdre Amsden design, published in her 1994 book Colourwash Quilts: A Personal Approach to Design & Technique. I re-constructed the size of Amsden’s design because I felt that this quilt should be a wee bit larger than that of a doll’s bassinet.

My Quip - Stop For A Moment To Remember... and Give Thanks.

Greetings,

Spring certainly is happening at its critical pace here in Tampa... in my garden.

The Ti plants, the amaryllis, the domesticated milkweed, and the scrub roses… and the little pinks that I forgot their names.

The weather is great, and I just stop in wonder in thanksgiving when there is much tragedy occurring all over this globe of ours.

Please stop for a moment and remember… and give thanks for each of our own gifts, and our short time on this planet.

My thoughts are with each of you,

Jim

Q80 – Quilt – Coral Steps

Good day,

Our new Quilt, Coral Steps, is finished. Three fabrics; a simple, geometric design; and variegated thread… this is our 81st Quilt.

Coral Steps, our adaptation of a design by Yoshiko Jinzenji, is complete with the dimensions of Width – 66 ½” (168.9 cms) and Length – 87” (221 cms). The coral pink, deep red, and centers of yellow are set in a lacy background of floral white and beige. The khaki tone of the backing provides a juxtaposition between the colors and shades of the top.

The construction of Coral Steps is made up of two size pieces; 759 2” (5.1 cms) by 4” (10.2 cms) rectangles and 46 2” (5.1 cms) by 2” (5.1 cms) squares. This is double the size of Yoshiko Jinzenji’s original design. Our Coral Steps is a smidgen larger than a twin size quilt.

Here are some more images of Coral Steps. Please note that there may be some change in the true colors of the fabric due to my camera, the sunlight and shade, and your browser.

We are currently working on five new quilts. Stay-tuned for She’s Here, NCBB, Colored Windows, Mystery Jelly, and DW’s.
