Q42 – Quilt - Patience

Afternoon,

More than 190,000 quilting stitches later, our new quilt, Patience is completed. This is the second completed quilt in our latest series.

As you can see the fabrics are very similar to our C&N quilt. The primary and outstanding difference in the construction of Patience from C&N is the parallel quilting lines that are ¼” (0.64 cms) apart. Patience's dimensions are Width – 62” (158 cms) and Length – 80” (203 cms). On a quick calculation that means that there are approximately 320 horizontal lines of quilting and each line is made up of about 594 stitches. All these stitches make for a relatively trim and smart quilt.

Here are two more views of the full quilt.

Our thanks again to Sushma Patel-Bould for allowing us the opportunity for working and adapting her original design. As we mentioned in our previous Quip, Sushma’s quilt Bauhaus won the Quilt National 2003 Juror’s Award of Merit. You can see Sushma’s Bauhaus Wall Hanging at her website Sushma Quilts.

And here are some close ups –

To see previously posted quilts, there is a visual grid presentation at the bottom of my Blog page. Move your cursor over any mini-picture found there and click to see an enlargement. Move your cursor to the "Q#" link to see the quilt's details. If the quilt’s title is highlighted in yellow, it has found a home in a collection and is no longer available.

Please let me know if anything on the Blogsite does to properly work, or do what it says it is supposed to do. I’m always working to make sure there is an ease of use.

If you are interested, and would like some more information of the available quilts, regarding costs, shipping, and insurance, please get in touch with me at our Quilts SB Etsy shop.

Next quilts on the way: A Mazed; Altered Logs I; Altered Logs II; V-Bricks; and Indian Summer Orange Peel. Stay tuned.

My Quip – Quilts in Progress – A Mazed

Early morning,

Thought you may like to take a gander at another of the new quilts in progress. This one is our own design and we call it A Mazed. Again we’re using similar fabrics that we have used in our previous works and of those that are currently in progress.

This time, as you can see the new fabric added is a mottled light green.

My thoughts, apart from using some of the Kaffe Fassett fabrics, were inspired in part by a living maze, the type where hedges and real plant life are used. And once again the construction is of squares and rectangles.

And we can guarantee you that there is no sequencing or pattern to our A Mazed. The top has been completed.

Enjoy,

Jim

My Quip – Quilts in Progress - Patience

Evening,

As I mentioned we’re busy at work designing and creating, and working our series of new quilts based on the 20 fabrics plus that we used in the C&N Quilt. Tonight’s Quip is one that incorporates those fabrics. A fair percentage is from Kaffe Fassett’s lines, but we have added others to supplement the color balance. We’ve given this quilt the title of Patience; Patience as it appears to provide that element in both the design, the quilting, and the colors.

The idea for Patience is from Sushma Patel-Bould’s quilt Bauhaus which won the Quilt National 2003 Juror’s Award of Merit. You can see Sushma’s Bauhaus Wall Hanging at her website Sushma Quilts, at www.sushmaquilts.com. Thanks, Sushma for giving us the opportunity to work with your original design.

The top of Patience has been finished and we’ve begun quilting the 62” (158 cms) by 80” (203 cms) quilt with horizontal lines approximately ¼” apart. Inserted also is my initial draft and design of Patience. If you look carefully you can see the corresponding fabrics in the the upper rows between the two images.

The tops to three other quilts are now completed: A Mazed, Altered Logs 12, and V Bricks. Stay tuned and I’ll keep you updated.

Enjoy,

Jim

My Quip – Quilts in Progress – Altered Logs

Afternoon,

Using the similar fabrics that we used in the C&N Quilt, plus some others, (see Q40), we’ve created 21 altered blocks based on the Log Cabin design. The blocks are not necessarily perpendicular or parallel “Log Cabin” squares but loosely based on the design. Check out the Log Cabin Pattern image.

From the 21 altered squares we’re going to try to create two quilts; one with 12 of the blocks and the other with nine. The insert includes some of the blocks that we’ve constructed.

Also something with Google has gone a bit awry; the Search This Blog feature in Quilt SB doesn't seem to work. Hopefully I'll figure out something shortly.

Stay tuned for our progress.

Enjoy,

Jim

My Quip – Quilts In Progress – Orange Peel Indian Summer

Afternoon,

We’ve been asked by a number of you “What quilt are you working on, right now?” “Can we see it?” And so I’ve decided to include a new Quip Posting. And no it’s not a joke or a short story. This new type of posting will be included in Quilts SB every so often just to provide a hint of the quilt projects we have in progress. At times it just may be a draft design… or a swatch of fabric. Sometimes it may just provide an insight to an idea. Will there be any dimensions? Maybe, and maybe not. Could the Quip indicate commissions? Maybe, maybe not. It’ll be a smattering of works in progress. And please feel free to ask questions. Just drop us an email.

The first Quip is of sort-of a major undertaking. It is a paper-pieced quilt and the design is based on one called Orange Peel Indian Summer. The top of the quilt has, give or take 2,200 pieces. And here a quick snapshot of a portion of the completed top.

The safety pins are holding the quilt sandwich together. The fabric that is showing at the upper right-hand corner of the image is the fabric of the backing. Due to the lighting, it is actually more of a shade of blue than the appearing grey.

Check back regularly or drop us an email to check on the progress of this quilt.

Enjoy,

Andy and Jim

Q41 – Quilt – Mimi’s Christmas

Early Morning,

Today’s quilt is one that we made for Mimi 10 years ago. This quilt is a remembrance of the precious times of family Christmases. The vibrant and subtle colors of the squares and rectangles remind us of the many unique presents that Mimi always squirreled away through-out the years just to surprise on each special Christmas Day.

Thank you Courtney and Sally for taking these pictures.

The dimensions are: Length – 86” (218 cms.); Width – 58” (147 cms.)

Q40 – Quilt – C&N

Good day,

Thought you may like the first quilt of our new series. We call the series – The IABTTSGH (It’s about bloody time that spring got here) Series. The first one of this new Series, C&N, was constructed and made as a wedding gift. Our initial thought and idea were developed from a review of the personal online bridal registries.

The dimensions of C&N are: Length – 95” (242 cms.); Width – 62” (158 cms.) We used 21 different fabrics to create our version, and about 50% of the fabrics are designs by Kaffe Fassett. The other stylish fabrics are of various designers that we thought may work with the overall color palette. Thanks to Allan and Veronica at Keep Me 'n Stitches for helping with the fabric choices.

The pattern is one we borrowed from Fassett’s book Kaleidoscope of Quilts, The Taunton Press, CT, 2006. He has two pattern examples called Morning Garden and Tapestry Garden.

And here are some close-ups of C&N:

My Quip - Damn Neighborhood Cats!

Damn neighborhood cats!

Yesterday we spent the time preparing the garden beds, planted peas, beans, and beans again, and some damn cat decided that my garden was its litter box. All my seeds were unearthed. And if I catch it I’m going to wring the bugger’s little, purring neck!

Now I like cats… but I also think that domesticated animals should be, just that domesticated, and kept on their own property.

And I’m not accepting the argument from any feline-lover that cats will be cats. Let them be cats at your house and yard. Well house cats are just that house cats, in your house, at your house, by your house, attached to your house… NOT my house. And I won’t accept the argument that a cat is a cat, it’s in their nature.

It’s in the nature of dogs to run wild in packs but we’ve bred a lot of that out of them. I could see a pack of 10-pound Rat Terriers terrorizing the neighborhood, hunting and foraging for food. I could see a pack of Labs trotting, wagging their tails looking for the proverbial pats on the head. But it was our Bella, the 11-pounder who sprang to action and scuttled the foibles of the damn tabby as it bounded off into the bush behind the house. It was Bella who squeezed through the pickets to try and chomp at the scurrying paws of that damn feline. It was Bella who came back covered in mud after making sure that the foe was distanced away. And I’m sure that Tinker felt so, so proud cause it was that orange devil-cat that had attacked her last fall.

And now my newly planted garden is a mess. The seeds are upturned and now mixed up. If I have to get licenses for, and there are county leash laws for my dogs, I will be the first in line now to support six-foot leashes for all domesticated cats. Period! And I know the house that this cat came from, and I will be sending them my grocery bills from now on.

Damn neighborhood cats!

Enjoy,

Jim

My Quip - A New Blogsite - Quilt SB

Good Evening All,

Due to traffic and necessity I have created a new Blogsite – Quilts SB – so that we can just post and update our quilt endeavors. All-things-being-equal having the two sites; one for quilts and one for genealogy, I certainly can hope to provide a better organized presentation.

Please feel free and let me know what you think of the new Blogsite… and the URL address should be easy to remember – http://quiltsb.blogspot.com/ .

I’ve transferred all the quilts and their associated Postings from my other Blogsite, Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt. I will no longer be adding Quilt Postings and discussions to that site. It’s also under-going a change and the new one will be up in a short bit.

As time goes on the new Quilts SB Blogsite will be undergoing changes and updates. Our Quilt Grid will be returning shortly. And we have five new quilts underway. Stay-tuned…

Enjoy.
