Q89 – Tetrishead – Wall Hanging - Quilt

Good Wet Afternoon,

This certainly t’ain’t sunny Florida. The street’s flooded and the water is cresting at the top of the pool. Alas, alas, it is the minions of Hurricane Irene.

But we continue to quilt, and I would like to introduce to you our new quilt and wall hanging, Tetrishead.

Tetrishead is the first of our new Cathedral Windows Series. My intention with the design of our Cathedral Windows Series is to see how we can push and play with fabric and thread to give the viewer that element of memory, time, and space. The inspiration of Zoë Keating’s moving cello composition Tetrishead was my inspiration for the title. I adapted the arrangement of for our Cathedral Windows based on English graphic designer Gary Clarke, whose ‘nom de plume’ is Graphic Nothing.

The dimensions of Tetrishead are: Width – 39” (99 cms); Length – 48” (122 cms). The majority of 100% cotton fabrics were designed by Katie PM for Marcus Brothers Textiles. The separating grey cloud fabric is a product of Timeless Treasures Fabrics. Our quilting includes three stylings; horizontal lines in each of the rectangles and squares; an accented quilting of highlighting the clouds; and a subtle connection of the actual window.

Here are some more images and close-ups of Tetrishead.

My Quip – NCBB Just Done – Tetrishead Composite – Dogwood Steps

Morning,

Well this is a precursory announcement that NCBB, North Carolina Blue Bargello is just done. The quilting and the binding has been completed. Now the clean-up… the catching and trimming of all those stray threads and the checking it twice sort-of deal.

My first composite of Tetrishead, of our Cathedral Windows Series, has been prepared. Thirteen plus one fabrics are on the table for Tetrishead. All fabrics are shades of white, grey, and black. All-things-being-equal Tetrishead, as a wall hanging, will be about 42” (107 cms) wide and 50” (127 cms) long.

All top fabrics for our new commission, Dogwood Steps have been received. Dogwood Steps will be a California King-sized quilt and a large under-taking. The design of this new quilt will be based on our quilt, Coral Steps. Dogwood Steps begins construction shortly.

Mondrain I, (see Mondrian I Progress Update), is sitting by the sidelines just waiting to be scheduled to be quilted. I haven’t as yet decided on the quilting design. Any suggestions are definitely invited. The design for Mondrian II has been printed, and now I have to choose the coordinating fabrics.

My Quip - Cathedral Windows Design - Tetrishead

Afternoon,

Well I’m working on the new design and specifications of our first Cathedral Window quilt/wall hanging – Tetrishead.

At times music inspires me to create in fabric that which I would like to convey. I have always been particular to the sounds and ambiences of the Cello. I stumbled upon Zoë Keating, originally from Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and her composition, Tetrishead. Her music is as stated at Stuck Between Stationsworks well in the foreground as it does in the background…

From my inspired graphic design, I know that I will have 24 rows of fabrics. I envision for Tetrishead an interplay of shades of black, grey, and white that will give this avant garde piece some semblance of movement. Thirteen fabrics have been chosen, and now to create the juxtaposition. Should also prove interesting calculating the exact measurement for each piece set of fabric. I am being hinted that, “We do not use the metric system of measurement.”

A number of other new designs are in the make. Stay-tuned and keep checking our updates at Quilts SB.

My Quip - Provence and Born This Way On Route To Cabarrus County, NC

Good morning and good afternoon,

We’ve been somewhat quiet these past few days, that is, quiet in the realm of our Quilts SB. It is not that we have forsaken our passion of quilt-making but... lightning strikes, a refrigerator catching fire, a new puppy, Radar, the addition to The Pack, and learning to sous-vide cook. (I’m still wondering if there is a verb to cooking à la sous vide... Sous-viding - pronounced sue-veeding.) We have been working diligently on a number of quilts.

Two quilts entries, Provence and Born This Way, hit the mail today. They are on their way to A Splash of Color Fiber Art & Quilt Show 2011, to take place this coming October 7th and 8th. The Show will be held at the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

Our NCBB Quilt, that is, North Carolina Blue Bargello Quilt, is off the rack. The quilting is done and the binding has been attached. This queen size quilt, soon to make its home in North Carolina is simply breath-taking. I will be writing a complete description upon final completion. Just wait until you see it.

We have received a new commission. This new Steps Quilt will be based on our award-winning quilt, Coral Steps. The fabrics for the top have been finalized. I am pleased to say that the two fabrics are just tremendous. And yes I did mention this in a previous Post, but we have changed the fabrics since that announcement... and if I may say for something that will blow you out of the water. (But then again I am a wee bit prejudiced.) And the final home for Steps Quilt will be New York.

A number of other new designs are in the make. Stay-tuned and keep checking our updates at Quilts SB.
