My Quip - A Quick Update

Good Day,

Just a quick update of our current projects.

The quilting work continues on our new Chopsticks quilt.

And we have begun the elementary designs of a new project.

We’re calling it the Post-it Network.

This one should prove something completely different once again.

The canvases to both our Reflection

and our new commission Moon Over Bayshore have been completed.

Our commission TBAJ is finished.

We're just waiting for the time of day.

Q125 – NT Celebration – King Size Quilt

Good Day,

Our new commissioned quilt, NT Celebration has been completed.

All-things-being-equal, Andy and I have tried to create, construct and present a quilt that held to the following requested guidelines:

• We used fabrics from the client’s, her husband’s, and her mother’s used shirts. 
• We used the main colors of red, white, and blue. 
• We were able to create a design that expressed and conveyed the client’s request. 
• We believe that we have created a quilt with a patriotic boldness.

NT Celebration has been our way of touching the ever popular tradition of quilting and the same time while creating warm bedding. It is now at its new home in central Florida.

NT Celebration is a king size quilt measuring 97 ½”- width by 114”- length.

The quilt is constructed of all salvaged and recycled clothes except the backing. 

The quilting is edge-to-edge in an interwoven curve pattern. The “patchwork” of the top is made of a series of blocks, all cut in two sizes – 4 ½” and 2 ½”, which were all cut from the clothes provided and then assembled.

The top is a representation of the Red, White, and Blue. The exploding fireworks are the celebrations we were asked to express.

My Quip – Chopsticks Update – The Inner Top Completed

Good Day,

The inner top of our new Chopsticks quilt has been completed.

All 120 blocks, constructed of 1,200 1 ½” by 5 ½” strips, have been pieced to create an inner top.

Now next to add the inner borders.

All fabric is a batik line from the Robert Kaufmann jelly rolls Chop Chop. Stay tuned for the soon to be revealed original design and final size.

Oh and by the way our commissioned NT Celebration king sized quilt has been finished. Come back to Quilts SB for our final write up.

My Quip – Chopsticks Update – Second Draft Design Completed and Chosen

Good Day,

Our second draft of our design, inspired by the Rail-Fence pattern, for our new and next quilt, Chopsticks, has been completed. The question was, do we create -

Traditional-like?

Or Abstract?

The numbers on each block represent all 120 blocks that we are using in the inner top of our Chopsticks design. Each block is created and pieced of 10 strips 1 ½” by 5 ½”. And yes there is an ordered random-like construction method used for each block. The inner top will be 10 blocks wide and 12 blocks long.

We decided to work an abstract design based on a background glowing light grid polka dot pattern from an iPad mini.

And the piecing work has begun.

The inner top fabric is all from one Robert Kaufmann jelly roll – Chop Chop.

My Quip – Progress – Chopsticks Quilt

Good Day,

Just a quick note. 88 blocks have been completed for our new Chopsticks quilt.

16 more in progress.

And hopefully 16 more can be made from the remaining strips.  Each strip is 1" wide and 5 1/2" long.

Our Chopsticks design has begun using CorelDRAW X7.

My Quip – New Quilt Project Started – Chopsticks

Good Day,

Well there have been a couple of Jelly Rolls just sitting on the shelf in our work room asking to be used.

Hell, don’t we all see and buy some fabric at some time and say to ourselves that’ll make a nice quilt? The new fabric was bought and then a number of other projects got in the way.  There always seems to be another one that butts into the project schedule and line.

And then I picked up Karen Fisher’s 2012 book Easy Grid Quilts. I like Karen’s approach to color and her use of mathematical progressions. I like her use of classic patterns and her examples of composed quilts. I also admire the use of the word “Easy”.

Her piece Garland just triggered a thought that I may be able to use one of the Jelly Rolls socked away in our work room. Karen’s certainly looks like a beautiful use of the Rail Fence pattern.

I picked one labelled Chop Chop by Robert Kaufman Fabrics by Lunn Studios. Why not?

These are the current inspirations for our new Chopsticks.  And here are some images of our current work.  At this point 80 of 120 blocks have been completed.

Do we know what our final Chopsticks will look like? Well, somewhat. Do we know the intended size of our finished Chopsticks? Maybe. Somewhat. Do we have an idea of a final design? Well…maybe.

Oh yeah, each strip is, pre-sewn, 1" wide by 5 1/2" long.

Andy and I are just as interested in what our final outcome will be. You’ll have to keep checking back to see our progress and where we are going. There is sort of a freedom creating a quilt in this manner.

Two other almost completed projects are our new Equality and NT Celebrations quilts.
