Q83 – Mystery Jelly Plus - Quilt

Good Early Morning,

Our next and most recently completed quilts – Mystery Jelly Plus, (MJ+). MJ+ is now on its way to its new home in North Carolina.

Our thanks to Kimberly Einmo, for the impetus of our adaptation of her original design.

The beginnings of MJ+ is a nine-block square. We increased it to 20 blocks and included sashing as a border around and between each block. Also a double border has been added around the perimeter. The dimensions of MJ+: Width - 64 ½” (164 cms); Length – 77 ½” (197 cms).

The fabrics are from Moda’s fabric line Maison de Garance designed by French General. The base colors are red and chocolate and variations thereof. This very popular Moda line can be seen at their Moda website as well as is available through many distributors and fabric shops, including Fabric.com and Hancock’s of Paducah.

Here are a number of images of MJ+; front, close-ups, and back. Please note that the colors of this quilt may be affected somewhat by the outdoor lighting and the quality of my picture taking.

This is the same quilt that had the preliminary name of Mystery Jelly.

My Quip – Mystery Jelly Progress and Update

Morning,

Our quilting work continues… and continues. The top of our new one of our quilts has been finished: Mystery Jelly (MJ). The borders have all been sewn to the perimeter.

MJ has been mounted to our frame and long-arm quilting machine. The design for the quilting has been selected. The top, the batting, and the backing are each loaded to one of three feeder rods. The idea is that as the quilting progresses the completed portion, the “quilt-wich”, is then loaded to a fourth rod. It is on the fourth rod that the quilted quilt is rolled up.

Once the quilting is finished, the binding is then added around the perimeter. It is then hand-stitched. MJ will be approximately 64” (163 cms) wide. The length will be about 77” (196 cms).

My Quip – Eleven Quilts in Progress

Afternoon,

Thought I'd just drop a quick Quip, (Quilts in Progress), and let you know where we are at with the new quilts.

Completed –

• OP Ornament – All specifications including the horizontal sleeve and our embroidered label have been attached. OP Ornament is scheduled to be delivered to MQX 2011 East at Providence, Rhode Island the beginning of next week.
• She’s Here – Has reached its new home in Wilmington, Delaware. I will be posting pictures and a short write-up this Sunday.

Tops Completed –

• Mystery Jelly – The top is finished and all borders have been connected. It has now been loaded on the frame and the quilting design has been chosen. Mystery Jelly will, upon completion, be going to its new home in North Carolina.
• NCBB – The NCBB Blue Bargello top has been finished. The borders are all attached and the embroidery signature work has been finished. NCBB will be taking up residence in the North Carolina.
• Colored Windows – The top, including borders of Colored Windows has been completed. We are currently working on the design of the quilting to enhance the brick wall and the window frames, as well as each of the individual shades.
• Mondrian I – This is our original design inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian. All 30 14” blocks and sashing have been connected and sewn to complete the top. The above inserted image is our preliminary design of Mondrian I.
• Orange Peel Indian Summer – The top has been completed. The intricacies of the quilting design and pattern are being developed.

Designs In Progress –

• Mondrain II – The design has been completed and now the fabric choices are in process.
• Escher I – The design is done. The two fabrics have been chosen. We are now trying to develop the tessellation detail to complement the fabric.
• DWS – The design is almost complete. The choices of fabrics are in process.

My Quip – Mystery Jelly Update – Two New Quilt Designs

Morning,

Okay, okay… Just wondering why I the first conscious thought that came into my head when I awoke this morning was Peter, Paul, and Mary… Or could it have been St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. Mary. Obviously I’m not religious, but I couldn’t think of anything else but sending up some prayers to some listening Saints this morning when I went outside to walk the Pack. There is frost on the roofs and the ground.

Peter, Paul, and Mary… This is Tampa, Florida! Please send some sun. Please. Or at least some sort of hammer so I can chisel the white stuff off the windows of the car. And can you Saints, collectively weave me the sunshine so that we can get on with the true Florida warmth?

All the same this is My Quip, (QUilt In Progress), about Mystery Jelly. The top for this new quilt has been finished.

Mystery Jelly (MJ) is an adaptation of a Kimberly Einmo design. The beginnings of MJ is a nine-block square. We’ve increased it to 20 blocks and included sashing as a border around and between each block. Also a double border has been added around the perimeter. The top is now 64” (163 cms) wide and 77” (196 cms) in length. It appears that it will be about the size of a lap or twin-size quilt. See the earlier My Quip for the MJ announcement.

And here’s a flash – Two new designs of our Rainbow Series are on the drawing board: Born This Way and Colored Windows. Stay-tuned for updates.

Oh, and just a note about the frozen palm in front of our house. It is a real picture that I did take a while ago when I forgot to turn off the water sprinkler system. Sorry to say the palm didn't survive. This morning's frost has changed the color of all the roofs in the neighborhood.

My Quip - Five New Quilts Preview

Good Day,

And it is overcast today… It is cold, and the third or fourth cold front in a week is heading down from Calgary and Inuvik. All right, already. This is Florida. Canada is a beautiful country… but please keep your cold weather. This is supposed to be the Sunshine State. You are supposed to come here for the sun and sand… not for the blues and the blahs.

I’ve received a number of comments and questions as to our quilting progress. And, have we given up quilting? No, we have not! Thanks for the concern, but be prepared.

We have five new quilts in progress… Three are already spoken for and we are excited to be working on all five.

Here is a preview. They are all titled at present, but the labels maybe will change.

NCBB – A Bargello wave design.

Mystery Jelly – An adaptation of a Kimberly Einmo design.

She’s Here – An adaptation of a Deirdre Amsden design.

Coral Steps – An adaptation of a Yoshiko Jinzenji design.

DW’s Queen – An original Essbee design.

These are not UFOs. The quilting acronym "UFO" implies an Unfinished Object, quilts that are started but never seem to finish. The above five are all in progress. We only have one UFO at this place. It is a completed Orange Peel Indian Summer quilt top.

My Quip – A New Quilt – Mystery Jelly

Afternoon,

And Happy Australia Day… which could have been yesterday, but then again it could be tomorrow, that is, where-ever you are located at this moment on this Globe.

And no I am not concocting a new dessert in the kitchen. Mystery Jelly is the preliminary title of our new quilt undertaking. This quilt is to be based on a design by Kimberly Einmo and a collaboration of two quilting blocks; a Star and a Chain block.

Here is a sampling of some of the completed blocks for Mystery Jelly.

Our fabrics are from Moda’s fabric line Maison de Garance designed by French General. The base colors are red and chocolate and variations thereof. This very popular Moda line can be seen at their Moda website as well as is available through many distributors and fabric shops, including Fabric.com and Hancock’s of Paducah.

We do not know what the final quilt will eventually look like, but you can see from my inserted images that this will be quite stylish and a quilt to have.

My Quip - Happy National Popcorn Day - New Quilts

Good day and Merry Christmas... Again.

Today, January 19, is Christmas Day for the Armenians of Jerusalem and the Holy Land.

And Happy National Popcorn Day! It is on this day that we can make and eat popcorn and pretend we are at the movies… Or if you would like to go one step further, you can jump around and pretend you are popcorn kernels popping. (Certainly the day for all hyperactivity to break loose!)

It is time to provide a quick update as to our progress at, and present some introductory ideas for our quilts and quilting for 2011.

The top for NC Blue Bargello (NCBB) Quilt, without the borders, has been sewn. The approximate 6,200 mini-rectangles of 16 fabrics create a fantastic flurry of 16 waves. NCBB top’s dimensions, again without the borders, is at present; Width – 83” (210.8 cms) and Length – 94” (238.8 cms).

My calculation is approximately 54 square feet or the equivalent of just over 6 square yards of fabric. This is a big quilt. In other words, about every 21 mini-rectangles represents 1 statute mile of North Carolina coastline. (The North Carolina coastline is about 301 statute miles.)

Here is a current sampling of NCBB.

The fabrics are in for a new design, DW’s Quilt. The ranges of colors are turquoise, beige, and sand. The preliminary sketching has been drafted and I’m plodding along with CorelDraw with the possibilities. More on DW’s later.

Following up with the Jelly Roll and Mystery Quilt class, Mystery Jelly construction is taking place based on the fabrics of Moda’s fabric line Maison de Garance. The base colors are red and chocolate. Our deviation from the requirements of size as suggested with Kimberly Einmo, (see My Quip), has now been transformed from a matrix of 9 squares to a configuration of 20 squares.

The Moda’s fabric line Maison de Garance will be our next challenge and will incorporate a new series of quilts. This fabric line is available through Fabric.com, Hancock’s of Paducah, as well as many others.

I'm exploring designs for a new small quilt... The arrival is expected in about May.

My Quip – Only 349 Days To Christmas – NC Blue Bargello Progress

Afternoon,

Just think, all the new toys, gifts, decorations put away, and the tree is taken down… and now you have just 348 more days think about Christmas 2011. Damn, this one will be a big one for me!

And we’ve been busy with our makings of new quilts.

NC Blue Bargello (NCBB) is progressing nicely. As I mentioned the top of NCBB, excluding the borders will be made up of about 6,200 rectangles. Once they are all sewn together in strips, there should be 97 single strips. The top - 16 fabrics, 6,200 rectangles, and 97 strips. And here’s a puzzler - Will the center strip be a peak or a valley in the wave design? Ya gotta stay tuned.

And to those of you who have asked, I used Excel software to design the basic parameters of the design and pattern of NCBB. The Bargello in this case is a matrix of many, many rectangular pieces gridded together to form the top.

The inserted images are some of the pieced fabric strips that will make up NCBB. Please remember that there may be some color difference due to lighting, software, and browser capabilities.

Andy took another class this past weekend in Land O’Lakes, Florida. It was a Mystery Jelly quilt class given by Kimberly Einmo using the fabrics of a Jelly Roll plus. Our design, which will be revealed at a later date will be based on fabrics of the series designed by French General for Moda Fabrics, Maison de Garance. The fabric, at this time is prevalent and we were able to get our supply through Fabric.com. Kimberly’s best-selling 2010 book is Jelly Roll, Quilts & More. It is available through American Quilter’s Society, AQS Publishing.

And we have received another commission to work a quilt in the color Turquoise. I’ve got this one in the drafting stages, and the design and complementary colors are in process.
