My Quip – Astro-Physics – The Top is Completed

Good Day,

The construction of the top of our Astro-Physics has been completed.

And of course, we’re not going to show you a complete picture at this junction in our creation of this new quilt and wall-hanging.

We are extremely pleased at what we have accomplished, based on the inspiration of Jacqueline de Jonge’s Fly Away. As compared to Jacqueline’s superb Fly Away, we have increased the number of planets and stars in our Astro-Physics from 11 to 19.

My Quip – Astro-Physics Quilt Border Design and Construction in Progress

Good Day,

Andy and I have designed, decided on the sequencing, and have begun the construction of the primary border for our Astro-Physics quilt.

This is sort of something new for us. We are combining a number of techniques of traditional, contemporary, modern, and art quilting that we have learned from the experts and from our research. This should prove interesting… and the way we are constructing the border is that if we don’t like it, we catch ditch it… No pun intended.

We have been working on ideas for the quilting of Astro-Physics. The books are out and we are looking for quilting both to compliment the design of the planets and the stars as well as to off-set the negative space…

My Quip – Andy and I Do Have Our Personal Quilt and Crochet Critic

Good Day,

And the new member of The Pack, Max has definitely developed the wherewithal as our personal quilt, crochet, and fabric art critic.

No matter where we are set in our shop, whether it is quilting or crocheting, Max always is there. Always with his commenting and appraising eye(s). He has to be forever checking out our work, as he is now sitting, squished between my back and my chair, as I type up my quick journal of our days work and events.

The background fabric has been chosen for our Astro-Physics. It is also batik.

The design stage of Tampa Kaleidoscope continues. I hope it rains today so that I can shut myself in the Design Room to work on the final design.

Double Entendre Afghan has increased in dimensions to Length – 36” and Width 48”. Only 24” more to complete the inner top.

Work continues on the quilting designs for both our new Equality and The Amulet quilts.

New fabric and yarn has arrived for a number of new ideas and designs. Also we have received a number of inquiries regarding the commissioning of new king-sized quilts. And the house is beginning to transform itself into a fabric sweat shop… given the increasing Tampa temperatures. Praise be there is a pool for those quick refreshing and needed breaks.

My Quip – Astro-Physics Quilt Wall Hanging – The Clustering of Planets Begin

Good Day,

Work continues on our Astro-Physics.

The clustering of the planets and stars is in process. Seven planets and stars will be clustered together and eight more will surround the cluster in our quilt wall hanging. Our adaptation is a sort-of deconstruction inspiration of Jacqueline de Jonge’s Fly Away.

The background fabric for our complete composition has been chosen. The design of our fifteen planets and stars should prove interesting. Also we are now designing a complementary border that, all-things-being-equal, should enhance the piece.

And of course Max has to check everything out.

My Quip – Astro-Physics Update – Nine More Planets and Stars Completed

Good Day,

And happy May Ray Day. We have now completed 9 more planets and stars for our Astro-Physics quilt wall-hanging project. All the component parts are now completed and now 15 planets and stars are pieced together.

Including the above, here are the addition nine planets and stars. And yes there is one that is duplicated in fabric and color.

I made an error in my previous posting and named Jacqueline de Jonge’s quilt Be Colorful. Its actual title is Fly Away. Her company located in The Netherlands is Be Colorful.

Seven of the planets and stars will be clustered, sewn, and pieced together. Our Astro-Physics cluster will be the mirror image of Jacqueline’s Fly Away. And so Andy is “clustering” backwards. The combination of both Sharon Schamber’s and Jacqueline de Jonge’s, coupled with Andy’s techniques is proving an exciting construction. The remaining eight planets and stars will be incorporated into the overall design of the quilt wall-hanging.

My Quip – Progress Continues – Astro-Physics - Quilt

Good Day,

Work continues on our Astro-Physics project. Andy is currently working on the elaboration of the planets and stars for our eventual quilt wall hanging, as inspired by Jacqueline de Jonge’s quilt Fly Away. A combination of Jacqueline de Jonge’s piecing and Sharon Schamber’s curved piecing techniques has provided some insight how to appropriately piece curves.

Our target and reconstructed design is 15 planets and stars, four more than are included in Jacqueline’s Fly Away.

My Quip - Our Quilts and Afghans in Progress - An Ancient Internet Speak

Good Day,

It is a wonder that humans are good at deciphering pictures on a cave wall.  And now we have to learn on old form of Internet-speak.  I was pretty good at it some 30 to 40 years ago, and I am wondering if Google will add it to it's Translate application.

Quilts - 25; and Afghans - 3; update and progress continues.  Here is the quick info on 10 of our current projects.

Hexagons for Tampa Kaleidoscope are all spread out in the design room. The colorways have been sorted into piles of shades.

The Amulet is loaded to the longarm. It is now basted. We are examining ideas for quilting, all-things-being equal to compliment the geometric form of the quilting.

The component parts of Astro-Physics are now being pieced together. Five of 15 have been completed.

A design quilting pattern is being developed for our in progress Equality Quilt.

New Damask and Native American fabrics has been received with thoughts of a couple more kaleidoscope quilts.

The completed blocks for our Jacob Ladder Pants quilt have all been moved to the design room.

We our thinking of deconstructing our work on the blocks of the Batique OM quilts.

And we are learning a new language once again, LOL.  Rnd2: Ch2, hdc in each hdc around, working 3 hdc in 2nd hdc of each corner, join with sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch-2.  This house now reads and and tries to speak English, Spanish, French, Latin, Twitter, and Crochet.

The first composition of a crocheted afghan, dark rose, almost burgundy and buff, is now 48" in width and 15" long.

And the sugar cane yarn is now in house. Exploring ideas.

This is not a complete list of all our work in progress but just a quick note of that which we are immediately working on.

We need to explore redoing our Quilts SB site. Stay tuned.

My Quip – Astro-Physics Quilt – Two More Blocks Readied

Good Day,

You’ve got to try this – Creamed Scrambled eggs with Smoked salmon and Nasturtiums. Just tremendous. Recipe called for chives, which I didn't have and so I substituted chopped Nasturtiums. For one - 2 eggs; 2 tablespoons ½ and ½ (didn't have cream); about 2-3 oz of smoked salmon; about a tablespoon of chopped Nasturtiums (didn't have chives); and ½ tablespoon of butter. Non-stick fry pan with butter on low medium. Mixed egg with ½ and ½. Heat in fry pan, use a spatula. Turn off heat when eggs were this side of being done, still a bit wet. Throw in chopped smoked salmon and folded with egg mixture. Amazingly, good.

And again, two more blocks/planets/stars have been prepared for Astro-Physics.

The Jacqueline De Jonge original has 11 blocks incorporated into its construction and creation. We’ve decided to take a step out and we’re reproducing our version with 15 blocks. Stay tuned for the progress of our Astro-Physics.

Quick Update - Our Civil War Reenactment 1 is now first in line on our quilting rack – aka our Longarm. The backing has been chosen and the quilting will be a characteristic Baptist Fan pattern.

My Quip – Another Block Completed for Astro-Physics Quilt

Good Day,

And I would presume that you are enjoying the start of 2012. We are certainly keeping ourselves preoccupied with the number of quilt projects that we have on the table.

In keeping with updating you as to the progress of our individual schemes, here is the next quasi-complete block for our Astro-Physics quilt/wall hanging. (And then again it may just remain, after being finished, in the closet.)

This is block/planet/star formation number 9 of our projected and possible 13 blocks. I am amazed at the technical work that Andy has to surmount in order to get the exact placement of all points in each and every triangle, and piece of fabric. And there is still the actual construction to follow.

My Quip – Astro-Physics Quilt Construction Update - Christmas Quilt Sale

As I can write, I wonder if I am falling into the realm of “What did I forget now?” Radar just looks at me with a puzzled look when I pace the floor trying to remember that which I should not forget.

Yesterday when I posted My Quip and the Update I jotted down 10 points… I forgot a very critical one, the 11th – Our current Update to our Astro-Physics Quilt. (And yes it is listed on our To-Do List.)

I mentioned in previous Astro-Physics Postings on Quilts SB that we are going for 13 or 15 blocks or planets and stars, a number over the 11 on Jacqueline de Jonge’s original design. I think it is apropos to add the additions as in keeping with the astronomical discovery of the new and possible Earth-like clones and prospects.

I’m always looking and surfing the Internet, books, magazines, shows, and wherever looking for ideas for Andy’s and my quilt inspirations. And I stumbled upon the work of Caedogán Rugs; an Irish company run by husband and wife, Denis Kenny and Fiona Gilboy. This company specializes in producing contemporary gun-tufted rugs and wall hangings. Very slick…

And we can only dream; big…

The next circular block for our Astro-Physics Quilt has been completed and is ready. To date six have are in the state of readiness. See previous Astro-Physics postings in Quilts SB.

It is 81°F, 27.2°C here in Tampa. We have quilts. The Holidays are just around the corner. Give a Quilt for the Holidays. My Quip – Astro-Physics – Update And A New Direction

Good Day,

The preparations for five blocks of Astro-Physics have been completed. In the Jacqueline de Jonge design there are 11 blocks in her pattern of Fly Away.

We have decided to take an audacious step beyond the set of her actual design. With the elements of her techniques, we will be adding at least two to five more blocks in our adaptation. The inserted image are the component pieces of one of the blocks.

As you can see it is in pieces, and the essence of Jacqueline, as in most quilt creations, the pieces and/or blocks are created as parts of a puzzle. Is should be very interesting what the final outcome of Astro-Physics will be.

Certainly would appreciate your feedback.

My Quip - Astro-Physics - Star Cluster

Good Day,

I wonder if media weather-persons have a hidden clause in their contracts that includes “by all means ensure that the heart-rates of panic are maintained at least a Category 3 Storm-Fear Factor”. Not that I am proposing that we ignore the signs of pending doom, but wouldn’t it be more conducive to provide weather prognosticators with an Eight Ball. And for all expectations, I truly didn’t know that someone else was thinking along the same lines.

And work continues on our Quilt Puzzle - Astro-Physics. The next two pieces two the puzzle are the next 8-pointed Star and the circular frame it will eventually set in. I have included two images for your viewing. It is thrilling and and challenging to follow, learn, and adapt Jacqueline de Jonge’s artistic and paper-piecing techniques.

Anyway from drizzling Tampa in the wake of the remnants of Hurricane Rina to the forecasting of the worst snowfall-to-come-in-ages-for-Chicago, we are continuing our insurance of warmth as we work our new quilt designs. We do make utilitarian quilts as well.

My Quip - Astro-Physics - 16 Points

Good Day,

And as I have stated, we never stop. Astro-Physics is most definitely a quilt puzzle.

Our introduction of the first piece in My Quip was the presentation of an 8-pointed star in a circle. This newly completed piece, aka block, has 16 points. Note the star on top of a star... in a the circle.

The intricacies of Jacqueline de Jonge's design are outstanding and breath-taking. Check out my previous Posts for other parts of the puzzle: Oct.16 and Oct.17.

My Quip – Astro-Physics – Another Completed Piece

Good Day,

Okay call me crazy. “Crazy!” This morning I attempted to walk Taylor, in her harness and sling, as well as the three minis from The Pack. I now know how marionette workers get their training. The only thing of course, wooden puppets don’t have minds of their own, and try to sniff everything in every direction. (That is, when the lights are turned on…)

And here is another completed part of our Astro-Physics quilt wall-hanging.

This piece looks like it belongs around the neck of some Egyptian Queen. It is in the format of a collar necklace.

My Quip – Astro-Physics – New Wall-Hanging Quilt Begins

Good Day,

Our journey into quilt making is ever an exciting one. And this is an introduction to the world of paper-piecing, points, curves, and little-bitty pieces of cut fabric where the seam allowances alone can swallow up the size-factors.

This piece is one of the eleven stars that you will encounter on your journey to Astro Physics

We have ventured into the outer dimensions of Jacqueline de Jonge. Andy most recently attended a two-day session with Jacqueline to learn the areas of her construction techniques. Our challenge is her design Fly Away.

Our fabric choices are batiks covering a tangible spectrum of rainbow colors. The first name of this endeavor is Astro-Physics. There are, what appears to be thousands of pieces ranging in colors and are all extracted from 29 different fabrics.

Astro-Physics will take some time. I will be posting the progression of the construction and present to you, over time, its creation and production.
