My Quip - Bloody Allergies - Joseph's Coat Update

Good Day,

It is a love/hate relationship. This time of the year is the most beautiful with the colors of new blooms, the abundance of shades; the time to feel alive… I love the expressions of Mother Nature.

And then the pollen begins! Hell, I hate this time of the year. Every time I got outside, I come back into the house with a film of pollen trigging an endless stream of nasal drip-drip-dripping, multiple sneezes to burst any sound barrier, and a constant trail of used Kleenex everywhere I turn.

I am now sitting at my PC, praising the Ø1 gods that I know where each letter and key is located on my keyboard. My eye lids are swollen from pollen irritation. And I keep saying to myself, just two more months of this, please let the days pass by quickly.

I thought you would like to see a new update of our progress on Joseph’s Coat. The quilt top is finished…and it is gorgeous.

Here are a few disclosing images.

The dimensions, at this point are: Width – 77 ¼” (196.2 cms) and Length – 87 ½” (222.2 cms). The size of Joseph’s Coat, at present, approximates the size of a Double Quilt. The top fabrics are a composition of 44 colors of the Robert Kaufman collection of Kona Cotton titled Dusty Colorstory.

My Quip - No Nom de Plume for Evolution - MQX East/West 2012

Good Day

Thought you may like to see what I discovered on Page 11 of the 2012 March/April Issue of Machine Quilting Unlimited magazine.

Think we’ve started over in another place, and another time.

And Andy has not created a nom de plume. He still is the same, quiet and reserved, Andy Brunhammer. No fancy name for this quilt artist.

We’re working on Evolution to get it ready for MQX East 2012 in Providence, Rhode Island in April. Evolution will also been on the road to MQX West 2012 in Portland, Oregon in October.

Hope to see you there.

Enjoy,

Jim and Andy.

My Quip – Joseph’s Coat Update

Good Day,

Joseph’s Coat is well underway… All 42 blocks are completed, as are the inner border stripes and the outer border blocks. Our initial speculation of the dimensions of Joseph’s Coat is that of a Double Sized quilt. This of course may change as we progress.

We are working with and trying ideas for the actual quilting. As the composition of Joseph’s Coat is of 44 colors and it is sort of a geometric design, we are attempting possible quilting that will highlight the movement of color.

Here are a couple more images of a couple of the completed blocks.

Our completed blocks, each of nine colors, will be the base of our adaptation of Joseph’s Coat. Each of the 42 blocks will be individual and a unique assembly of varying colors. This is our adaptation of Kaffe Fassett's design X-Factor.

If you are interested, and would like some more information of available quilts, regarding costs, shipping, and insurance, please check our Quilts SB Etsy shop.

My Quip – A Hint of A New Quilt – Joseph’s Coat

Good Day,

How do you divide 44 colors by 9? Simple count to 44, add 1 from the next 44, totals 45, divided by 9 equals 5! This is our preliminary construction of the blocks for our new quilt, Joseph’s Coat.

We are working on an adaptation of Kaffe Fassett’s design, X-Factor from his 2010 book Quilts en Provence. The fabrics we have chosen are from the Robert Kaufman Fabrics collection of Kona Cotton Solids. The Dusty Colorstory assembly is 44 picks of the available 216 fabrics.

Our completed blocks, each of nine colors, will be the base of our adaptation of Joseph’s Coat. Each of the 42 blocks will be individual and a unique assembly of varying colors.

My Quip - Quilts SB Update - We Are NOT Busy!

Good Morning,

It is that update time again at Quilts SB… Just a spare minute to note down and bring you up-to-date on what Andy and I are working.

Since the beginning of January we have accomplished much more than we thought we had, and at times it is a wee bit mind boggling.

Three Quilts have been finished; Civil War Re-Enactment I (or CWR I), Dogwood Steps, and Blue Diamonds. Check out their Postings. We are truly amazed.

Dogwood Steps has reached its new home in New York and the new owner is thrilled with the composition and achievement.

Blue Diamonds has been submitted for entry in the category Wallhanging Large – Art at the Machine Quilters Exhibition, MQX East 2012 in Providence, Rhode Island. We are waiting to hear if it is accepted as a finalist.

The Happy Bug Quilt has been embroidered and I have designed the quilting pattern to complete the construction. Once it is completed, it will be traveling to its new home.

Andy has finished all 15 blocks for Astro-Physics. This design will be our adaptation of Jacqueline de Jonge Fly Away.

The Amulet top has been completed and we are making a few modifications. It is definitely in queue.

I have decided on a quilting matrix for Mondrain I. It should be making its way to the rack shortly. This quilt will be a part of our Rainbow Series.

Tampa Lightning top has been completed, and if we can be so bold, it is going to be a gorgeous quilt.

Two new quilt projects are on the way. The first, The All Blue Quilt, that is comprised of varying shades of blue. It is based on and inspired by a Kimberly Einmo design. The second, Joseph’s Coat is our adaptation of Kaffe Fassett’s X-Factor. Our design will have 44 colors and fabrics without any pattern. Both should prove interesting. The above inserted image is of scraps for Joseph's Coat.

Mauk II is still under construction. It is the next quilt in our Escher Series.

I am still working on the design to our next Bargello Quilt – Rán. My initial drafts have been completed and now I have to deconstruct my actual design to calculate the appropriate parts, albeit fabric cuts.

Work is continuing on my adaptation and inspiration of Gunta Stölz's 1928 Jacquard weaving 5 Chöre. This should prove interesting, as well as challenging.

And then of course, there is the work to be done on our MQX 2012 Exhibit “Evolution”. If you get a chance, and are in Providence, Rhode Island in April, stop in at the Convention Center for a visit.

And lastly, but not finally, I am pondering the new design of a new quilt, Kumquat. Definitely stay tuned for this one.

Q96 – Blue Diamonds – Quilt and Wall Hanging

Good Day,

I would like to introduce to you our newly completed quilt and wall hanging, Blue Diamonds.

Blue Diamonds is our original design inspired by Paul Klee’s 1923 painting “Twin Tents”. It is currently in the Angela Rosengart Collection in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The top is composed of 63 blue diamonds. Each diamond is unique and has its own disposition on an individual complimentary background. Horizontal and parallel lines, as well as the border diamonds were purposely composed to highlight the impact of the rarity of blue diamonds.

The composition of the top of Blue Diamonds is comprised of 1,890 single pieces. To create the mirror imaging there are 945 pairs. Each one of the 63 blocks is not, and I repeat not, a duplicate of each other. Hence there is one heck of a lot more time involved determining the color and shade combinations and mirror imaging for, and cutting and sewing each block.

Blue Diamonds is also a matrix construction of batik fabric of 7 blocks wide and 9 blocks in length. The dimensions are: Length – 70 ½” (179.1 cms); Width – 58” (147.3 cms).

The quilting alone of Blue Diamonds took about 110 hours. We wanted the quilting to highlight and reflect the essence of the Blue Diamonds from the explosion of the small diamonds in the four corners to the line-up of those on the three borders, and to the reflection of the spirit of the facets of a cut diamond in each of the 63 blocks.

Here are images of close-ups.

And of the backing.
