My Quip – Guess What Just Came In The Mail? – Quilters Newsletter

Good Day,

We’re both grinning from ear-to-ear. You cannot imagine our delight!

Delivered, today, at our front door was a copy of the April/May 2012/No.427 issue of Quilter’s Newsletter. This national magazine, published today in Colorado, has been gracing magazine racks since 1969.

When we opened and turned the cover and flipped over a couple of pages into the magazine, guess what?

Guess what?

On Page 10 – eYeQ News, Neighbors, Notions and What’s New by Bill Gardner at the left-bottom corner is a picture of our Colored Windows, aka Colored Windows II. Check it out…

We’re ecstatic… It’s Chinese Take-out for supper!

Thank you Janet-Lee Santeusanio, and thank you Scott Murkin. Check out our Quilts SB Posting for the details of Colored Windows II.

We’re currently working on our Evolution Exhibit for MQX East and West 2012. Colored Windows II will be included in the show.

Enjoy,

Andy and Jim

Q88 – Colored Windows II - Quilt

Evening,

What is 498882? This is not a code. It is not a location anywhere in this world. There are 498882 stitches in the quilting of our new quilt, Colored Windows II. This is our 88th Quilt. Colored Windows II, aka Coloured Windows II north of the border, is our newest addition to our Rainbow Glass Series.

The 498882 count does not include the stitching of the fabric pieces or the hand-binding of the border. 498882 stitches equal to over 6,000 yards of thread. That’s just about 3.41 miles; or 5.49 kilometers of thread. And the color is Butter Rum.

Colored Windows II is our adaptation of Amy Walsh's pattern, Rear Window, inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s movie. We have used three primary- and three secondary-colored batik fabrics, as well as a black one to create the shades of all the windows. Four beige-to-brown fabrics were incorporated to generate the window frames, the brick wall, the backing, and the binding. The quilting incorporates both free-motion stippling and cobble stone, and linear techniques.

Colored Windows II is 60% plus larger than our first Colored Windows. The dimensions of Colored Windows II are: Length – 109 inches; 277 centimeters, and Width – 75 inches; 191 centimeters. This is just somewhat larger than a standard Queen-size quilt.

Here are some images of close-ups and the backing of Colored Windows II.

My Quip - Colored Windows II aka Coloured Windows II

Morning,

Thought you would appreciate a quick status on the progress of Colored Window II, Coloured Windows II for you far-Northerners.

At this point the cobbled-brick work, the stippled window frames, and the horizontal lines of the shades have taken over 170,000 stiches. And that is just about half-way done of the quilting. I’m just wondering where between 350,000 and 400,000 stiches will be reached. We had to order two more, large monster spools of the matching thread.

Colored Windows II has been our biggest challenge as yet.

As a note, we have not programmed our Longarm quilting machine to do the work. It does have the electronic capabilities but Colored Windows II has to be done manually with the machine. (Sorry about the pseudo-oxymoron.) We cannot just turn on the machine and walk away.

We are amazed at we have learned and definitely look forward to what is yet to come.

Check out our currently available quilts at Quilts SB Etsy, especially the current Sale on our Christmas Quilts.

At least 10 new Quilts and Series are now in progress – Mondrian I and Mondrian II; Mauk II and Mauk III; NCBB; Colored Windows II; Orange Peel Indian Summer; Paul Klee 1 and Paul Keel 2; and our new Cathedral Window Series. I have designed at least four variations on the Cathedral Window Series.
