Q95 – Dogwood Steps – Quilt – Heads to New York

Good Day,

Our newly designed Quilt – Dogwood Steps – has been completed. It is now on its way to its new home in New York. Consulting with the new owner, and inspired by the workings of Yoshiko Jinzenji the classic and bold design of the fabric has given Dogwood Steps its own life and personality.

Dogwood Steps is a large constructed quilt capable of fitting a King or Queen sized bed. The dimensions are Width – 98.5” (250.2 cms) and Length – 97.5” (247.6 cms)… but the construction of this quilt allows it to be displayed in either direction. Dogwood Steps Quilt top is constructed of 1,188 pieces from two fabrics. The 1,188 pieces will make 46 rows of pieced squares in a “step-progression”, either vertically or horizontally.

Here are some images and close-ups of Dogwood Steps.

The construction of the back of Dogwood Steps permits a completely reversible and complimentary Quilt. Just take a gander at the images of the reverse side.

And then some more images.

The design of Dogwood Steps is based on our Quilt Coral Steps. At the request of the client, some adaptations and variations were worked to the scheme of Coral Steps to produce the final design of Dogwood Steps.

Q94 – Civil War Re-Enactment I or CWR I - Quilt

Good Day,

Well we’re about a month beyond the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War, but better late than never. Our new original Quilt is Civil War Re-Enactment I, or CWR I for short, is now complete… and are we ever pleased.

CWR I is sort of a labor of history and a work of care and regard. CWR I is our original design, but it is a compilation of parts and constructions that have existed for years, and could be credited, all-things-being-equal to the Civil War era and times.

My first intent was to create a reproduction of a quilt that was made and produced about the time of the great event. In my research and search for actual designs that may have been constructed during that time frame, there appears to be a very small number in safe-keeping. Many were destroyed, and many were used to cover up casualties and subsequently were buried with the soldiers' remains. The number quilts that were made during the War has been estimated in about 150,000 to 250,000. I suppose an actual figure may never be known. Many more were made after as commemorative.

My first goal was to find material that may be close to and may be claimed as a reproduction of Civil War Era fabric. The fabrics that are used in the construction of the top are two by Judie Rothermel for Moda Fabrics Presents The Civil War Chronicles. The third is by Sara Morgan for Bluehill Fabrics, the Civil War Era C.1865.

The back fabric is a roll of cotton fabric that I discovered and thought it should be used to compliment the top. A further discussion of our construction of the top of CWR I can be found at My Quip Postings – Civil War Re-Enactment Quilt; Update #1; Update #2; Update #3; and Update.

The final dimensions of our CWR I are: Length 86” ( cms); and Width 69” ( cms). It is a wee bit smaller than the proposed dimensions for a Double-sized quilt but somewhat larger than the recommended Civil War Cot-size requirements.

Check out the quilting. We based the focus of the quilting on the Baptist, or Methodist Fan style as what appears to have been one of the techniques of quilting used during that time period. Oh and by the way, there are approximately 104,000 stitches in the quilting.

Here are some images and close-ups.

My Quip – Astro-Physics Quilt – Two More Blocks Readied

Good Day,

You’ve got to try this – Creamed Scrambled eggs with Smoked salmon and Nasturtiums. Just tremendous. Recipe called for chives, which I didn't have and so I substituted chopped Nasturtiums. For one - 2 eggs; 2 tablespoons ½ and ½ (didn't have cream); about 2-3 oz of smoked salmon; about a tablespoon of chopped Nasturtiums (didn't have chives); and ½ tablespoon of butter. Non-stick fry pan with butter on low medium. Mixed egg with ½ and ½. Heat in fry pan, use a spatula. Turn off heat when eggs were this side of being done, still a bit wet. Throw in chopped smoked salmon and folded with egg mixture. Amazingly, good.

And again, two more blocks/planets/stars have been prepared for Astro-Physics.

The Jacqueline De Jonge original has 11 blocks incorporated into its construction and creation. We’ve decided to take a step out and we’re reproducing our version with 15 blocks. Stay tuned for the progress of our Astro-Physics.

Quick Update - Our Civil War Reenactment 1 is now first in line on our quilting rack – aka our Longarm. The backing has been chosen and the quilting will be a characteristic Baptist Fan pattern.

My Quip – The Amulet – A New Quilt Begins

Good Day,

Where in the heck did this cold weather come from? And no, before any of you reading this who reside north the 39th Parallel, I am not a wimp. The temperature has dropped, here in Tampa Bay, in the last couple of hours by about 10° F (12.2° C). AND it is getting colder!!! Yesterday, I was in shorts and barefoot. Right now I have on socks, sweater, and long pants. I’m freezing… I do not like our days of winter in the south!

And we have begun the process of a new creation; an original design inspired by the work of artist Richard Tsosie.

Our new quilt is The Amulet. Here are the cut pieces, 114 which do not include the borders or the backing. The Amulet will approximate the dimensions – Width: 72” (182.9 cms) and Length: 94” (238.8 cms). This will be about the size of a Double-size quilt.

The 114 parts of fabric are being pieced to create mirror images.

Stay-tuned to my updates.

My Quip – Another Block Completed for Astro-Physics Quilt

Good Day,

And I would presume that you are enjoying the start of 2012. We are certainly keeping ourselves preoccupied with the number of quilt projects that we have on the table.

In keeping with updating you as to the progress of our individual schemes, here is the next quasi-complete block for our Astro-Physics quilt/wall hanging. (And then again it may just remain, after being finished, in the closet.)

This is block/planet/star formation number 9 of our projected and possible 13 blocks. I am amazed at the technical work that Andy has to surmount in order to get the exact placement of all points in each and every triangle, and piece of fabric. And there is still the actual construction to follow.

Check out my new experimental format of my Blog, Quilts SB Test. Certainly would appreciate your feedback.

Good Day and a Great Start to a New Year...

This April Andy and I have been invited to present a Special Exhibit of our quilt work and journey at MQX East 2012.
