Q119 – Sea and Sky – Quilt and Wall Hanging

Good Day,

Andy and I would like to present our 119th quilt and wall hanging, Sea and Sky.

Sea and Sky was designed, pieced, and quilted by Jim Smith and Andy Brunhammer

The inspiration for our Sea and Sky is a combination and connection to our design Light Bringer. It is a creation using paper piecing and applique while focusing on the idea of a geometric perspective design.

Sea and Sky is the second of a series of three quilts and wall hangings all inspired by the movement of the Hoffman Challenge fabric Indigo of the Anisa line. Including the two other quilts, also our original designs, Light Bringer and Diamonds, we attempt to relate a story of a moving creation. Apart from the Indigo fabric we incorporated the Aqua, Black, Mint, Blues, and Pink fabrics of the Anisa line into our design.

Our Sea and Sky measures: Width – 38 ¼” (97.2 cms) by Length/Height 38 ½” (97.8 cms). All thread used in our quilting design is Sulky thread selected for the Hoffman Challenge. Our idea was to use a diagonal grid over the strip piecing. In the kaleidoscopes/hexagons we’ve used descending, yet joined hexagons. We added a series of concentric arcs and quilted a pebbling effect beginning at the vanishing point.

Q118 – Light Bringer – Quilt and Wall Hanging

Good Day,

Andy and I would like to present our 118th quilt and wall hanging, Light Bringer.

Light Bringer was designed, pieced, and quilted by Jim Smith and Andy Brunhammer

The inspiration for our Light Bringer is a combination of both the contemporary works of Maxine Rosenthal and Bruce Seeds as well as traditional brick piecing technique.

Light Bringer is the first of a series of three quilts and wall hangings all inspired by the movement of the Hoffman Challenge fabric Indigo of the Anisa line. Including the two other quilts, also our original designs, Sea and Sky and Diamonds, we attempt to relate a story of a moving creation. Apart from the Indigo fabric we incorporated the Aqua, Black, Mint, Blues, and Pink fabrics of the Anisa line into our design.

Our Light Bringer measures: Width – 46 ½” (118.0 cms) by Length/Height 28” (71.1 cms). All thread used in our quilting design is Sulky thread selected for the Hoffman Challenge. Our idea was to use a diagonal grid over the strip piecing. Over the kaleidoscope/hexagon area we’ve thought of descending, yet joined, hexagons within each kaleidoscope.

My Quip – Trying To Decide – New Design Quilt and Wall Hanging – TZ1

Good Day,

It’s been almost two months minus a day since I last updated our Quilts SB site. I thought that it was about time that I start doing that right now.

Andy and I have been working on a number of pieces and we have completed and shipped some new quilts and wall hangings. For reasons, I decided to delay the announcements and the write-ups of the new ones. All of that will be explained shortly. I have been keeping updates going via emails and at our Quilts SB Facebook and Google+ pages. And there is much housekeeping to do on the blog site that I thought that today was a good day as any to start.

We’re working on a new design inspired by the works of artist and designer Tilman Zitzmann. Andy’s and my first design will be identified as TZ1. We’re right now playing with piecing to try and determine what size we would like the finished quilt and wall hanging to be. There are three possibilities.

Oh and by the way the red is just scrap material… but I am not saying that we may be influenced by the red.

We have narrowed down to three possible sizes: 1 ½” squares sewn; 1 ¾” squares sewn; and 2” squares sewn. (And note that I wrote plural, squares.)  The above top image is 1 ½”. The next are 1 ¾” and 2”, respectively.

And that’s all I am going to reveal right now.

I have some more ideas about this new endeavor that we both see this as a new progression in our learning and experimenting with fabric and the world of quilting.

Q117 – Warhol’s Itch – Quilt and Wall Hanging

Good Day,

And now for something completely different. Our Warhol’s Itch quilt and wall hanging has been completed.

Yes Andy and I have finished what we think is a unique type of a quilt and wall hanging. We are amazed at we have accomplished and how this new quilt has come about. Our original Warhol’s Marilyn is now our Warhol’s Itch.

Obviously we were inspired, thank you Norma Jean, Andy Warhol, Billy Wilder, Julie Styne, and Leo Robins. by a number of ideas and available techniques and technology.  Andy and I have come up with something that we hope, apart from being different, is something that is distinctive, and a part of our quilting learning experience. The story of our Warhol’s Itch is a continuation of our current journey into the world of quilting and fabric art.

The dimensions of our Warhol’s Itch are: Wide – 42” (107 cms) and Length (at the lowest point) – 40” (102 cms). Warhol’s Itch will have a hanging sleeve and our personalized label added shortly.
